One thing I wish I asked him what was the postcode of the road.Īnyway, I told this story not to prevent helping a stranger in trouble, but to know that this con happens and which questions to ask if you able to give some money. ( This is more than likely just to make myself feel better ) I told myself he sort of deserved the cash, the audacity of a con and the confidence and charisma he showed in hindsight was impressive. Needless to say, he didn't come back to pay back the money. He didn't particularly flinch and we went for the short walk, knocked on the door, no one answered and I gave him a 20. In the end I said that we would go knock on the door of the house he told me he lived. I apologised many times that i didn't reconise him, and that i didn't want to give a stranger £18. I'm not an idiot, i knew what was going on but what if this person was legit? The temperature had already plummeted, what if i told his guy to get lost but was really stranded. I've lived in London 11 years and had people come up to me many times with one story or another how they need a small amount of cash. He goes onto tell me how his keys and wallet are at work but had filled up his car with petrol at a nearby petrol station - because he didn't have any cash with him, they wouldn't let him drive his car away. He apologises profusely about disturbing me at this late time but saw my lights on so would give it a try. He then goes on to tell me he has been on a late shift at work and is locked out of his house. He tells me he saw me and my GF whilst hoovering his car on the weekend but I'm looking ambivalent and uses some broad and unspecific stories to try and convince me who he is. He claims his name was Jay from number 37 (I'm 53 and far enough away not to know those neighbours well). It was a man in a high-vis vest looking distressed. To prevent waking everyone else in the house up, I cautiously answered the door. I was up watching TV in the lounge and kinda freaked. The other night, around 2am, someone knocked on my door repeatedly. More UK Subreddits A list of all manner of Anglo-centric subs.UK Personal Finance Banking, savings, etc. ![]()
